Porcelain Crown
These intra oral photos show restoration of a heavily decayed upper left central incisor seen in the ‘before’ picture with a porcelain crown seen in the ‘after’ picture. The dark discoloured appearance of the remaining aspect of the tooth is due to previous root canal treatment being carried out. Due to the extensive loss of tooth substance the final porcelain crown was retained by a fabricated metal post and core cemented into the root canals. This type of restoration would entail a minimum of two dental surgery visits. At the first visit tooth preparation is carried out which would include post-hole preparation and impressions taken. An appropriate shade of porcelain for the final crown is selected and a recording taken of the patients jaw relation. The dental laboratory first fabricates the metal post core retainer over which is fabricated the porcelain crown restoration. The dentist can cement this two component restoration into the tooth at the second dental surgery visit.
