Composite Restorations
These intra oral dental photos show the immediate short term management of dental trauma to a child (by a dentist). In this case, caused by a fall; resulting in fracture of the upper left and right central incisors. The aims of treatment are to maintain the vitality of the pulp and to restore the shape of the tooth (to prevent tipping of adjacent teeth or over eruption of the opposing teeth). The immediate emergency dental treatment consists of protecting the pulp from bacterial contamination or thermal (hot/cold) stimuli by isolating the exposed dentine. Ideally the treatment should be carried out as soon as possible as delay may increase the chance of the tooth becoming non vital (pulp death). The ‘after’ intra oral photo, shows the fractured incisor tooth restored with composite resin restorations. Further restorative treatment may be carried out at a later time to achieve an enhanced cosmetic appearance. The upper left and right central incisors should be monitored at regular intervals after initial treatment, to assess if pulp death does occur.
